Meeting Minutes: September 17, 2024

Meeting Start: 5:30pm, Tuesday

  • |5:40|
      • Plans for today: build a dipole
      • There was no noticeable information for the tower project
      • The last update was that Matt had gotten is that the ‘lock is broken’
  • |5:42|
      • Fisher is adding the names of each person who signed up for the club during Club-fest.
      • Matt has fixed his alternator after finding out there was a loose wire.
  • |5:44| Matt has picked the idea as to whether we should switch to VE instead of ARRL, in hopes to find a more digital accommodating testing.
      • ARRL: Matt believes that they don’t do a lot through electronics, mail, tests
      • VE: Los Angeles: offer both paper and electronic, allowing you to print out the tests (School students = free)
      • If everything were to switch to electronic 1: would allow to do remote 2: don’t have to for in-person exams and might make it easier.
      • When things are done by paper, it’s anywhere from 3 to 6 days, the ARRL takes time to get the process in. This is a not a switch that needs to happen, however Matt believes it would be useful.
      • Would the creation be as simple as an application?
      • The W5YL will recognize if you were one before
      • Greater Los Angeles would be a little more picky (not the best idea from Matt)
  • |5:47|
      • Jesse is in support of the decision
      • Matt just wants a better way to do electronic exams
    • When would the class be:
      •  (Other related information):
      • Matt already has materials in canvas shell
      • Could have it be a self-paced class
      • Give practice exams
    • Then do an exam on an assigned day
      • Have a day signed up
      • Have a ‘cram day’ and then immediately take the exam
      • ‘FCC rules’ that trip up the students most commonly on the exam.
  • |5:49|
    • Jesse thinks that just do the test or self-paced class
      • Still has his VE credentials along with Jason and Kristen.
      • Cylaunch for sure, a few from habit, a few from CySat
      • A Saturday and Care could by a Saturday.
  •  |5:52|
      • How to work with a VE (Brief Summary):
        • Send in a term
        • A booklet is sent
        • Take the open book test
        • If you pass you get a badge (similar to the license it is valid for 10 years)

        • 605 forms, basic informations, grade the tests, send it all to the VEC,
  • |5:56|
